The honest UCLA college tour you wish you got

The lies about public scandals and USC fights were fun and all, but we want the real deal.

UCLA is big, and Los Angeles is even bigger. While the whole college application process was overwhelming at times, so is a massive college campus educating 44,947 students that could be your home for the next four years.

College tours tend to focus on everything bright and beautiful about UCLA. And while that’s all fine, here are all of the real answers to the real questions prospective Bruins want to know.

How hard are the classes?

With an 18% acceptance rate, this school is hard. It is definitely doable, but you’ll see people studying everywhere and anywhere. Chances are, if you were at the top of your high school class, you could be feeling pretty average once you get here. Bruins are competitive, ambitious, and always striving for success. You better be prepared to work hard and learn lots!

What’s a quarter system?

One of UCLA’s most distinct features is the fact that we have three midterm seasons a year and three final seasons a year. It’s basically like having three mini semesters. #GoBruins

What’s the transportation system like?

Los Angeles is equipped with a complex public transportation system, but that’s kind of the problem. It’s just a little too complex. Your best bet for getting around the city or hitting the beach is calling an Uber or Lyft. Don’t forget that you can split with your friends! Biking is nearly impossible given all the hills and massive staircases, so if you can’t get a car, walking is the next best choice.

Is the food really that good?

Yes. UCLA’s food has been the top ranking by many different sources, and for good reason. We have hundreds of dining options every week, from Chinese, to Mexican, to Greek – and it’s all delicious.

Do people actually hang out in Westwood?

Honestly, if you’re living on the Hill, Westwood can seem like a pretty far walk. Plus, there’s always a lot happening on campus. It’s a little hard to get to during the week, but Westwood is the perfect place to enjoy a great meal out on the weekends!

Are there parties / do I have to party?

Yes and no! UCLA is a great place just because of how diverse the student population is. There’s always someone willing to study in the lounge with you and someone ready to hit frat row. There’s an amazing balance of social and academic life, just make sure you find the balance that’s right for you! Parties usually happen Thursday-Saturday nights, so that leaves plenty of time to hit the books during the week.

Sports?!?!

Sports. Bruins are BIG on supporting their teams, and it’s actually pretty fun to get out there and cheer on UCLA. Games are a great way to meet new people and get hype with your friends – definitely something to take part in, even if you don’t know the first thing about athletics.

How big is Greek life?

When you’re in Greek life, it can seem like everyone is. However, only around 12% of UCLA’s student population is in a Greek organization, so there’s so no pressure to feel like you have to pledge your soul away to Sigma Apple Pie (though I do highly recommend).

What about clubs?

UCLA has a club for just about anything you can think of. The only downside is that a lot of the really popular clubs and organizations make you apply…and actually reject applicants because of how many students are interested! Even clubs here are competitive, so always be on your best game.

This all sounds great, but…how do I get in?

Honestly, no one knows. With over 100,000 applicants, the whole process can seem like a giant lottery. For me, UCLA is a dream. And all dreams take hard work to achieve. Do your best and get involved – hope to see you here! And if all else fails, the meme page accepts everyone – courtesy of Chancellor Gene D. Block.
