Confirmed case of meningitis at UC Berkeley

UHS is holding special drop-in hours for vaccinations

Yesterday, the medical and executive directors of the Tang center sent a campus wide e-mail to alert the campus community that local health officials confirmed a single case of meningococcal meningitis in a UC Berkeley student.

The student has been treated and is now recovering.

This case was caused by meningococcus group B, which is not covered by the required meningitis vaccine. Students age 25 and under interested in receiving the vaccine for group B can visit UHS’s special drop-in hours on Thursday, March 23 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Tang center.

The e-mail urges students to “be aware of the symptoms and take any needed action before leaving for Spring Break”.

Symptoms include fever, severe headache, rash, bodyaches/joint pain, nasea/vomiting, increased sensitivity to light, confusion, and stiff neck.
