UC Berkeley receives record breaking number of applications

UC reports that the diversity of applicants has increased as well

UC Berkeley received a record breaking number of applications for the fall of 2017- over 85,000.

More than 171,000 freshmen applied to University of California schools for the fall of 2017. According to UC data, this all-time high marks a 6% rise in applicants from last year.

Applications for UCLA, UCSD, and UC Irvine also numbered over 85,000.

The composition of these UC applicants reflects an increase in diversity as well- not just in the sheer number. Indicating an increase from last year’s pool, Asian Americans account for 29.1%, Latinos comprise 37.2%, and African Americans total 6.2% of the applicants.

For the fall of 2016, UC Berkeley sent around 300 students to commute to take classes in San Francisco, to account for the over-acceptance of freshmen and transfer students.

The Mercury News reports that the San Francisco program will continue, with improvements, to accommodate the rising admissions.
