UC Berkeley is one of the top 10 most diverse schools in the country

It’s a melting pot – in both intellect and diversity

Berkeley has ranked eighth inĀ Priceonomics‘ top 100 most diverse colleges in America.

It seems like every college tour, orientation, or pamphlet boasts that particular college’s diversity; it’s always on of the hot topics of college admissions.

“As diversity in higher education becomes increasingly measured and studied, we were curious about just which schools have the most diverse student bodies. Which schools have a balanced student body and which schools are all pretty much just one race?”

To calculate, Priceonomics used five racial/ethnic categories (White, Asian, Hispanic, Black, and other). By using population data from the Department of Education and BestColleges.com , they created an index ranging from 1 (the least diverse) to 1/N (the most diverse). In other words, the smaller the index, the more diverse the school.

The top ten stars some familiar names; Stanford ranks number one, UCLA as second best, and UC Berkeley as number eight.

The table shows certain trends; schools in California tend to be more diverse, larger universities tend to be more diverse, and the top schools in the ranking tend to have the most financial resources.

Attending a school that has high diversity, like UC Berkeley (go Bears!), has incredible advantages. There are so many clubs and organizations to help students find their place and build a support system- not to mention all the wonderful worldly foods and cultures that you get to experience.
