This Temple student perfectly summarized what college is like in her video ‘The 10 College Commandments’

Thou shall learn a lot from your freshmen year at Temple and so on

We were once all naive freshmen at once, excited about what about our college experience would be like. But as time went on, we all contemplated how to make money (Google search: “How to make money as a college dropout”)

Despite the stress of being a college student and all the curveballs we face, Temple, and the friends we make in North Philly, slowly becomes our home. From the beginning of our freshman year, we grow to love our school and learn lessons that only Temple University could teach us.

Hanna Marcinak, a freshman film and media arts major, created a video about her first year at Temple University  for her Media Arts II class and it perfectly summarizes the experiences of freshmen at our school.

The Tab Temple interviewed Hanna about her 10 Commandments video and the advice she would give to future Temple Owls.

Why did you create this video and how long did it take to make it?

I created this video to tell the story of my first year of college. It was a rollercoaster of a year and I grew so much as a person. I wanted to capture everything I went through. It took me about a week to complete the final video.

Could you explain how your first year at Temple was for you and what hometown are you from?

I’m from Pittsburgh and until coming to Temple I had never been to Philadelphia before. The beginning of the year was definitely a hard transition for me, but eventually I got the hang of it and decided I love it here.

What’s your advice for incoming Temple students and which dorm hall did you live at?

My advice for incoming freshmen is to give college a chance. It takes a little bit of time to get used to, but eventually you will find your people and your place. I lived in Johnson & Hardwick dorms which really helped me meet fantastic people living on my floor, including my roommate. One last thing I wish someone would have told me before starting college is that loneliness is just another part of the experience that no one seems to talk about. You will have a lot of time to yourself, but that’s okay! You are here to grow and find yourself, so use that time to get even more comfortable with yourself.

Have you always made videos on your own and why did you choose specifically to make your video about the commandments to college?

I have been making videos ever since I was a little kid. I always was taking the homemovie camera from my mom and eventually taught myself how to edit in the fourth grade. I chose to do my video on the commandments of college because I wanted to share my experiences but put a creative spin on the idea.

After your first year at Temple and learning what you learned, are you excited to be a sophomore?

Going into sophomore year, I am excited to grow as a filmmaker in this wonderful city of Philadelphia. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for me and I am excited to continue producing YouTube content about my college experiences.

Did you get an A on this project (I hope, it was great)?

I think I got an A (I’m actually not sure yet…but my TA really liked it and so did my peers)
