First Year Players to present Big Fish beginning 13 April

The well-known student organization will bring the show to life in Goldstein Auditorium

Though Mayfest and Block Party may be the most anticipated musical events of the semester, the musical theater event this year is FYP’s production of Big Fish.

The larger-than-life show tells the outrageous tale of Edward Bloom based on stories he has told his son Will, a grown man who is about to be married and will have a child. Will doesn’t believe any of the stories his father tells him about “meeting witches, kissing mermaids or joining the circus.” He can’t even bring himself to believe how his father proposed to Sandra, his mother, in a field of daffodils at Auburn University. As Edward’s health begins to decline, the stories have caused a tense relationship between him and his son, leading Will to be caught between believing the extravagant tales or losing his relationship with his father before his death.

First Year Players is a student-run theater organization for first-year and transfer students. Those interested go through an audition or interview process for acceptance into the organization in January and begin work on the show shortly after.

The wonderful thing about FYP is it isn’t just a show; it’s a family and an experience. The unique organization features a “First Year Experience Team,” a group of dedicated upperclassmen who plan bonding events for first-year members. Examples of previous FYX events have previously included FYChopped (a cooking extravaganza) and going to SkyZone. The events are intended to get first-years acclimated with one another and to give them an outlet to relieve stress and to be themselves.

This year, the incredible Big Fish will be held 13 April through 15 April in Goldstein Auditorium. Tickets are now on sale through the Schine Box Office, both online and in person.
