We asked freshman boys what it was like to do laundry for the first time

After all, they’ve been in college for months they should definitely know how to wash, dry and fold by now…

Not to play off gender stereotypes but do boys actually know how to do laundry?

Genuinely curious if boys know the difference between laundry detergent liquid and laundry pods, whether they separate their darks from their lights and whether they even know what fabric softener is or what it does, I sat down with some of my best guy friends to ask them about their first time laundry when they came to ‘Cuse. Their answers (obviously) were hilarious.

Here are most of the boys I interviewed. Although they know how to party, I was curious if they knew how to do their laundry…

I started easy and asked most of them if they had ever done laundry before coming to college. Although most of them said they had not, I was surprised to hear that some of them had actually done it before and had been doing it for years! After narrowing down the ones I could torture with questions -I mean interview, I asked away and provided my commentary for some added entertainment.

Justin, Broadcast & Digital Journalism

“The first time I had to call my mom because I had no clue what all the buttons meant and which ones to press. And, I actually wait at least two days to take my clothes out of the dryer because I’m simply too lazy. When I see my clothes sitting on top of the washer because someone took them out I take that as my cue to fold them. ”

[I mean, there’s a button that says start, that’s all you really need… and you’re that guy everyone on the floor hates because you leave your laundry for like a week in the one working dryer]

Alex, Economics

“I had never really done laundry before and definitely didn’t look forward to it. When my parents first moved me in, I made sure my mom walked me through all the different settings. I actually really look forward to doing laundry, I find it interesting.”

[Interesting? Are you kidding? I find my stats lecture more interesting than folding my underwear.]

Josh, Business & Information Technology

“The first time I had to do laundry in college was the second semester since I used a laundry service for the first semester…When I came back from break, I had to call my mom to make sure I was doing everything right.”

[ A laundry service? A laundry service? Seriously??? Doesn’t that creep you out that a stranger is like, touching your clothes?]

Constantinos, Mechanical Engineering

“I don’t care whether the clothes are colored or not I just throw everything in there. I didn’t even ask my mom, I figured it out on my own.”

[Laundry at its laziest people…]

Zach, Mechanical Engineering

“Yeah, I had to text my mom asking how much detergent I could use and which items I had to separate. To be honest, it takes me 20-30 minutes just to fold.”

[Me too man, me too. Folding is the worst!]

Sean, Finance

“At the beginning of the year, I put off doing my laundry for the first couple weeks. Finally I called my mom and she told me to separate my darks and lights… Yeah I still don’t do that.”

[Jokes on you, if you don’t separate your darks and lights you may end up changing your shirts from white to pink]

Well there you have it. Turns out that for the boys I interviewed, laundry was foreign, unconquered territory and that it took some getting used to for most of them. Regardless, at least they do their laundry instead of letting it pile up until it spills over on their desk chair! Props to them…

Wash, dry, fold, repeat boys. Just wash, dry, fold, repeat!
