Syracuse students foster love and support amidst fear and sadness

A group of students rallied together offering hugs, love, and support

Myself and others gathered together in a circle on the quad and began holding signs that stood for love and unity. Just a few seconds later a man obnoxiously walked in our direction splurted out, “It’s the people’s protest. It’s quiet, I know, I’m so sad–the people voted and they won”  in a super sarcastic tone.”

Unfortunately, though, the reality of this election is scary for many. Here are some individuals who are standing up for love, hope, and acceptance.

Musical Theater major Taylor Feldman smiled while holding her poster sign.  “I couldn’t sleep the first thing I did was call my mom and I was like what happened? How did this happen?” she said.

Freshman acting major Anthony Hernandez held this sign that stated he is with everyone that Trump is against. He also said “love binds us– it is what makes us.”  After people had multiple conversations, everyone started to sing several song, including Seasons of Love from Rent.

After so many people joined in on the protest, we moved to the promenade so there was enough room for everyone. When we got there, we began to chant, “spread love, not hate” and “build love, not a wall.”

John Cleland is smiling because he is with and for the minority –  “The protest that happened today wasn’t about making change, it’s about knowing and being reminded that were not alone.”

There were signs everywhere and voices that echoed on the promenade. It was impossible to walk by and not notice our protest. All were welcomed to join, and lots of free hugs were given out.

Today, students at Syracuse University chose to spread love on our campus. We came together and brought brought positiveness during a time where we all need it most, and we reminded the world that were not alone in this.

Times like these make being an American actually great.
