Amber Rose on consent, politics, and that controversial Kanye video

consent can be sexy, babe

On November 2nd, the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma hosted an exclusive “Women in Distinction” event featuring model, actress, talk show host, entrepreneur, and female advocate Amber Rose. Rose took the stage at the Goldstein Auditorium in Schine to  speak about the importance of recognizing rape culture, and female empowerment.

The brothers hosted the event because they feel that men need to be a part of the conversation, or, as one of the bothers put it, we need to “create a culture that means you don’t have to be anti-men to be pro-women.”

The event held a lot of value, as it was a good way for students to come together in a safe place to discuss rape culture and beyond. The first part of the talk was a formal interview with Amber, talking about her political views, her work with the slut walk, and her life in general.

Here are some key words of wisdom from Rose:

What an average day for Amber includes:

“I help women a lot, it’s a lot of stuff that I don’t put on social media.” “I became somewhat of a counselor”

On Politics:

“Im with her.”

“You kind of know that Trump is not gonna give a shit at all.”

The importance of educating men on rape culture:

“I teach my son what a period is.”

“Knowledge is power. Kids are never too young to know everything.”

“There is a lack of education, if you do not say yes, in that very moment, then its rape.”

“Just get educated. I like to make guys very uncomfortable; anytime you wanna slut-shame a women, just think of your mom begging for your dad’s sperm when she conceived you.”

Asking for consent:

“Let it be awkward.”

“Of course it (consent) can be sexy, babe.”

“You can ask for a consent like ‘you’re a little cutie,do you mind if i-‘.”

Addressing negative comments:

I’ve been blessed with beauty, but it was also a curse for me. I’ve always been bullied because of that.”

“I refer to myself as a certified slut.I do shit like this because I was a school slut when i was a virgin, only because of a rumor. That was something I could not escape.”

“I would walk down the street with my mom when I was 11, and men would make comments.I just always had a body when I was young.”

“As I got older I fell in love, got married, had a kid.I get divorced ,go to a Chipotle with a guy and suddenly I’m the worst mom and the biggest slut.”

“Im not gonna stand for this and I know that I am not the only woman out there that is going through this shit.”

“I take those derogatory terms and embrace them. Like, society doesn’t call me a queen, society calls me a slut. You can’t call me that because I already called myself that. Embrace the negativity.”

On her Slutwalk campaign:

“My Slutwalk is a safe place for you to come to be comfortable in your own skin and talk with other women.”

“This year we had more security-which is very important for a slut walk. You don’t want to get sexually assaulted at a slut walk…I want to make it into a Coachella for women. To know that its a safe place and a no-judgement zone.”

What it means to be a bad bitch:

“Being a bad bitch is not being mean and rude, it’s being compassionate.Using your voice and starting a movement.Start something in your college, just help whenever you can.”

“I don’t promote you to be a hoe, I promote you to protect yourself.”

Getting help:

“You consensually can do something one night, and say no the next night. But authorities don’t see that”

“If Donald Trump came up and touched my private area as a regular person, who do you call? Donald Trump, a multimillionaire. Who do you call, 911? Do you call the President? How the fuck do you get in touch with the President? It’s a lose-lose situation in this country. There are so many women that Bill Cosby raped. If he raped you at the height of his career-he is the most famous father figure, who do you tell? Who will believe you? That’s why those women sat at home for twenty years and took that L.Who are they gonna tell? Nobody.”

“Where are the outlets for us to  go as women that have been sexually assaulted and raped? You can’t call 911. You can, but it depends. They start looking at your path- like you were a stripper, it’s on your Facebook that you had a threesome, you consensually had sex with your boyfriend and now all of a sudden your boyfriend raped you.”

…And lastly, being in Kanye West’s music video for ‘Famous’:

“I don’t find it to be empowering. He didn’t ask for my permission to been that video.”
