DIY Halloween costumes

Halloween can be a tricky thing for college girls living on a budget, but have no fear! Take a look at these cute and creative DIY costumes for some inspiration.

Creating the perfect Halloween costume takes time and effort – because the best costumes are the ones that are made with creativity and care. A quick stop at your local Michael’s (or your roommate’s closet) may behold just what you need to complete your Halloween look.

Need some ideas? Below are some resourceful and inventive costumes put together by Syracuse students.

Kristin Mascolo, Sophomore, Marketing Management and Public Relations

A costume you can snack on! Just kidding. This is a plastic popcorn garland ordered from Amazon for $7. All you need now is a cheap bra, some super glue and you’re set! This look follows the three C’s to a perfect DIY costume: Cute, Cheap and easy to Construct.

Eleni Veros, Senior, Architecture

Love this look! If you’re a crafter, then this a fun costume to try. Eleni says all you need for this piñata-inspired costume is party streamers. You cut the streamers into little slits and super glue them to the skirt and top. The headband is actually made out of recycled butter containers decorated with more streamers and confetti. So cute! Where’s my candy?

Abby Snelling, Sophomore, Political Science and Policy Studies & Natalli Amato, Sophomore, Public Relations and Sociology

Lauren Cunningham, Sophomore, Advertising

When in doubt, be your favorite drink!

Emma Thomson and Monika Arbaciauskaite, Seniors, Chemical Engineering

It’s always fun to dress up as your favorite childhood characters. Emma and Monika went for the Sesame Street-inspired look by sewing feathered boas from a costume store to their tops. The eyes are styrofoam balls glued to a headband; the pupils and noses are pieces of felt fabric.

Anita Karimu, Junior, Architecture

Anita thrifted at Salvation Army for her costume, which she then cut and sewed herself into a cute Winnie the Pooh costume!

Gabby Fox, Sophomore, Sociology

Mermaids are trending on the Halloween scene. To recreate this look you need super glue, plastic shells and a cheap bra. A metallic skirt paired with cut up fish net tights complete the “captured mermaid” costume. To top off the look, add some scale-like makeup to your face.

Rachel Kucharski, Junior, Television, Radio and Film

Costumes that add some humor are always a hit. Rachel created a “Rehab Barbie” look. By repurposing a pink vinyl skirt, Rachel really thought outside of the box with this costume.

So grab your sewing kit and superglue; it’s time to get costuming!
