The upsetting inequalities between Syracuse MBB and WBB

This is something I will never grow to understand

Syracuse Women’s basketball made it to the championship game on Monday night, while Syracuse men lost Saturday night in Houston. While most people spent their Sunday moping over the loss of the Syracuse Men’s team, they missed an outstanding performance by the women, ultimately leading them to the National Championship.

Not only does it seem like we, as a school, care less about the successes of the women’s basketball team, the media seems to not care as much about the women either.

When the men’s team made it to the Final Four, the school sent out an email providing us with the option of going to Houston and receiving free transportation to go to the game. It wasn’t until a student protested not taking us to the women’s game that the school actually took that team into account.

Another thing I noticed while purchasing my Final Four shirt, is that there were so many products specifically for the men’s team, while the women’s team’s shirt had to be shared with the men. Syracuse clearly has no problem recognizing the men’s team as individual but when it comes to the women’s team, the spotlight is shared.

This is not me going on some huge feminist rant about which gender is better than the other. This is a rant about equality. The men’s team has some very solid players, but so does the women’s. Shouldn’t we be celebrating the women making it to the championship instead of mourning the loss of our men in the Final Four?
