VIDEO: The protest at USC wasn’t anti-Trump, it was pro-human rights

Protesters ordered pizza and offered some to Trump supporters

On November 11, Columbia held its very own Trump protest. A couple hundred people came out to the South Carolina State House grounds to protest the president-elect, Donald J. Trump.

Protesters gathered peacefully with signs and marched down Main St. and Gervais St., chanting phrases like “Dump Trump” and “Not my president.”

Police were there to insure nothing got out of hand.

A small number of Trump supports stood in the back as well,  protesting the Trump protesters and occasionally calling out a phrase of their own like “Trump on top.”

Every protester was there for their own reason, but an overwhelming amount were there because they are point-blank afraid of Trump. No one can deny that Trump ran a discriminatory campaign and now millions of Americans cannot believe he will be representing the same people he insulted.

These people are not whining but are practicing their constitutional right for something they truly believe in. They were peaceful and some even went up and talked to the Trump supporters.

People were hugging and laughing, but they were passionate, and the energy from them could be felt.

Right now in American history, everyone has a different opinion of the president-elect. The protesters were not necessarily protesting Trump but what they think he stands for. To them, he stands for racism, sexism, Islamophobia, bigotry, and discrimination in general.

They are not protesting because they think Hillary Clinton should be president instead; they are protesting because, to them, human rights are more important than any policy.

Trump supporters are not necessarily racists or bigots, but they are not concerned with human rights. They do not care what Trump said because they are more interested in his policies, and that is the big split this country has to assess right now.

The United States of America was built on differences. Americans do not need to agree with the Trump protesters, but I do think they can learn from them. They were peaceful, and they do care about others.

Someone in the crowd ordered pizza for everyone, and they offered some to the Trump supporters; that is what America is about. It is about respecting your neighbor no matter what they look like or believe in. Trump has a lot of work to do to unite this nation, but there is no doubt, America can and will come up with a compromise.
