Rutgers to build brand new Athletic Performance Center

The RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center will house facilities for the Rutgers basketball, wrestling and gymnastics teams

Recently, the Rutgers University Board of Governors approved for construction to begin on a multisport training facility for Rutgers athletics that will be housed on Livingston Campus in Piscataway.

The 125,000 square-foot athletic practice facility will serve to replace the currently outdated facilities at Rutgers, and will offer larger practice rooms and locker rooms as well as brand new strength-training and conditioning equipment. The facility is expected to open it’s doors in July 2019 and will be used by the men’s and women’s basketball, gymnastics and wrestling teams.

Named after Rutgers’ partnership with RWJBarnabas Health, the RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center will also serve to create a comprehensive sports medicine program that will incorporate both Rutgers athletics as well as students. Thus through this partnership, RWJBarnabas Health will become the exclusive health care provider of Rutgers Athletics and the front runner in creating one of the best sports medicine programs in the state.

This facility is one of three to be funded through Rutgers’ Big Ten Build campaign, which has already generated approximately $71.1 million of its $100 million goal.  In addition to the RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performace Center, this Big Ten Build campaign will also improve facilities for both the lacrosse and soccer teams as well as provide an updated football training complex at the Hale Center on Busch campus.

When discussing the impact that these new facilities will have upon the Rutgers community Antonio Calcado, the executive vice president for strategic planning and operations at Rutgers stated that, “When completed, the RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center will serve our Big Ten athletes, benefit the wider New Jersey community through sports medicine research and provide parking in what will be a vibrant corner of the Livingston Campus.”

The RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center will be located on the southwest corner of the Athletics Plaza on Livingston campus, and will be within walking distance from the Louis Brown Athletic Center and the Rutgers Business School.
