RUPD investigating after attempted sexual assault outside Van Dyck Hall

It happened yesterday

On May 4, RUPD sent out a crime alert reporting that they were investigating an aggravated assault that took place near Van Dyck Hall in the early morning. According to the alert, a female student said that she was approached by a male perpetrator who struck her in the face but fled after she called for help.

Today, in addition to a description of the perpetrator, RUPD included a new detail, saying: “Further investigation has revealed that this assault was committed during an attempted sexual assault.”

RUPD along with the New Brunswick Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s office are now looking for the suspect who is described as “a black male, 30 to 40 years old, approximately 6’2″ tall, approximately 200 pounds, with dark hair, wearing dark baggy pants, work boots, and a grey zip up hooded sweatshirt.”

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

This incident comes just a month after Rutgers Women Organizing Against Harassment held thee event Take Back the Night, which aimed to end sexual violence against women and give them the freedom to walk around at night without fear of violence.

RUPD is asking anyone with information or who may have been in the area at the time of the incident to contact either Detective Sgt. Carlos Rodriguez of RUPD at (848)-932-8025 or the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s office at (732)-745-8675.
