Students shut down hateful protesters outside Towers

An evangelical Christian group was heard yelling ‘go back to your mom’s basement!’

This afternoon, a group of anti-gay, anti-black, anti-feminist protestors arrived on Towers Patio with signs that read “HOMOS GO TO HELL” and “WOMEN BELONG IN THE KITCHEN.”

The protest was moved to the Fifth Avenue sidewalk as students began crowding the area. Eventually, it was impossible to walk past. Students began yelling at the protestors and chanting.

Pitt students wasted no time putting together a counter-protest including pride flags and signs of their own.

“WE CAN’T HEAR YOU” was all that could be heard towards the end of the protest. After 45 minutes or so, police escorted protestors away from the scene.

Freshman Carly Flaig told us she came down because she heard shouting from her room in Holland and saw videos of the protest on Snapchat. “I’m really glad this is how the school reacted.”

Needless to say, Pitt does not stand for hate.

Partial video of the protest can be found here.
