IGA is closed and everyone is freaking out about it

RIP to nine years of memories

In case you haven’t heard yet, IGA is closing because of competition with other supermarkets.

Well, it’s closed.

Yep. Apparently no one in South Oakland wants to go to IGA, especially with Aldi and Whole Foods as very close options.

That isn’t the unified opinion, because people on Pitt’s campus are pretty upset. Which market will we go to now? Will we be spending all of our money on Uber or lugging bags of groceries onto the bus?

“Unless you have a car, it’s hard to get to a market,” said junior Sean McNamara, who appreciated IGA’s location.

Senior Kyle Landon, who was shocked to see the sign on the door told us, “I went to the IGA and was really bummed they were closed. There’s no other supermarket on campus like it where I could go to get fresh food.”

Clearly, a major issue is that we’ve now lost our easy access to a real grocery store. The real question is, should you be upset? Have we forgotten the horror stories about IGA food?

In case you shopped at IGA, here is a list of other supermarkets in the area:

Giant Eagle in Squirrel Hill: take any 61 bus.

Giant Eagle on The Waterfront: take the 61D for easiest access.

Giant Eagle and Whole Foods in Shadyside: take the 75.

Giant Eagle in Southside: take the 54.
