The First Lady ripped Donald Trump on the campaign trail at Pitt yesterday

‘Hillary is more qualified than any other candidate in history, and she happens to be a woman’

I was in the presence of royalty today, and her name is Michelle Obama. Several hundred people showed up to the event. They stood in line for hours. A few fainted, and some actually vomited while waiting outside. But they still kept their place within the crowd. Because everyone loves Michelle Obama. Intellect, grace and influence – the First Lady showed that her husband isn’t the only political powerhouse in the White House.

And she couldn’t have come to Pittsburgh at a better time. Recent polls have shown Hillary Clinton’s previous 8-point national lead down to a 2-point advantage, within the margin of error. Hillary has been relying on her powerful surrogates to deliver her message from state-to-state, and a Pennsylvania win is of the utmost importance.

She began her stump speech by reminiscing on her almost eight years in the White House. She discussed the legacies and the hardships. She talked about leaving the White House, how much history she would have to pack into the boxes that would be shipped to her new home, and what lies ahead.

(And then everyone screamed, “No, we need you!” and “Please don’t leave us!”)

But Michelle silenced everyone, and everyone was quiet because everyone loves Michelle Obama.

“Transitions can bring a lot of uncertainty,” she said. Of course, not only did the statement apply to the Obama clan, but also to the nation. We don’t know where the nation is headed. We don’t know who will win on Election Day. Two very different candidates have the potential to create two very different presidents.

“It is the highest stakes, most 24-7 job you can imagine. The easy questions never get to the president. Challenges are never just black and white. What kind of president do you want?”

She let us ponder the question. And then, she went after Trump. She challenged his judgment on the birtherism movement and his accusations of President Obama not being born in the United States. She called him out for his sexist and degrading comments towards women, and his racist, anti-immigrant agenda. She discussed the federal taxes that he neglected to pay over the years. How happy he was when the housing market collapsed because he was able to make a quick buck.

She called him a “whiner.” And a “crier.” “Temperamentally unfit.” “Ignorant.” Too ignorant to make his own policy decisions, and too temperamental to be commander-in-chief.

“The presidency doesn’t change who you are. It reveals who you are,” she said. “Donald Trump is not good for the working class, he’s not good for minorities, and he’s not good for women. Can I get an amen?” And then everyone said, “Amen,” because Michelle Obama asked us to and everyone loves Michelle Obama.

According to Michelle, Hillary embodies everything that Trump does not. She worked for the Children’s Defense Fund; she’s pushed for universal healthcare; she’s fighting for debt-free college and a higher minimum wage; she’s fought for women’s rights and will continue to do so; she won’t destroy the economy. Although many people, especially millennials, believe that Secretary Clinton is the lesser of two evils when compared to Trump, Michelle tried to erase that stigma today. Millennials launched Barack Obama to victory in 2012, and for Hillary to win, she’ll need their help once again. Our help.

“There is no such thing as a perfect candidate…a protest vote is a vote for Donald Trump.

“The Democratic candidate running for office is more qualified than any other candidate in history. And she just happens to be a woman.”
