I tried to stick to the Kardashian diet

You don’t realize how tough it is to live without dairy or gluten until you can’t have it anymore

The ever famous Kardashians are the poster family for beauty these days. They are the fashion icons (Kendall and Kylie) and the body goals (Kim and Khloe). Everyone wants to be like them and look like them, and potentially eat like them?

The Kardashians stray away from gluten and dairy and only eat lean meats. So, for a day, I did the same. It is safe to say that I won’t be trying it again for a few reasons.

There are three dairy products that I’m a huge fan of: yogurt, milk and cheese. I have yogurt one to two times a day and drink lots of milk, especially with my morning cereal. If I don’t go for cereal in the morning, I go for a turkey bacon, egg and cheese sandwich or an egg white omelet with cheese. Remembering that parts of all of those were off limits, I started the day off a bit discouraged. I went with oatmeal and a banana, because oatmeal is one of my other favorites.

After breakfast, I thought it through and decided it would be good to have rice and beans for lunch because we had that for lunch a lot during spring break in Ecuador and I grew to really like it. With no other options in mind, I headed to Chipotle.

When I got there, I remember that lean meats are also allowed in the Kardashian diet, so I added chicken, lettuce and tomatoes to my bowl of rice and pinto beans. Telling the woman behind the counter not to add cheese did hurt my heart a little bit, though.

I messed up at dinner, though I had good intentions. I went with my friend, Natasha, to Attman’s Deli to get some cheese-free omelets. I ordered correctly, getting an egg white omelet with spinach and tomatoes. The issue came when the waitress offered us free samples of their homemade honey cake. Of course, upon hearing the word free, my answer was “YES” like the college student I am. So there I was, shoving gluten into my mouth. Natasha and I both caught it after I had swallowed. Oops.

We traveled back to the mall to go see a movie. We had some time to kill so we went to Starbucks. Being a good girl, I got a peach tea lemonade.

My next and final slip-up occurred when we, having 20 more minutes to kill, ventured into a candy store. Natasha, the chocolate fiend she is, began inquiring about which chocolate bars were best, and then the woman helping her began to offer us free samples. This time, I knew before I took the bite that I was supposed to be dairy-free, but it’s not every day that a candy store employee offers you to try multiple types of expensive candy, so saying no would be unjust!

So, that was fun (not really). And here’s why I won’t be sticking to it. To quote WebMD, “For people with celiac disease, a gluten-free diet is essential. But for others, ‘unless people are very careful, a gluten-free diet can lack  vitamins, minerals, and fiber,’ says Peter H.R. Green, MD.” Being gluten free is not necessarily better for you and, in fact, can be very bad for you. Don’t do it if you don’t need to.

As for dairy, there are pros and cons to cutting it from your diet. It can cause acne, but it also builds bone mass. Mass consumption could put you at a higher risk of cancer, but dairy can actually help you lose weight because it leaves you feeling fuller. My advice is to just cut down on dairy, but not cut it out. I used to be a huge dairy person, and I still enjoy my cheese, but when I cut down on dairy, I felt a lot better.

Moral of the story: the Kardashian diet is not that great.
