Oregon basketball’s Kavell Bigby-Williams under investigation for sexual assault

He was accused of sexual assault last September

Former Oregon basketball player Kavell Bigby-Williams is under investigation for sexual assault.

According to the Emerald’s Kenny Jacoby, Bigby-Williams has been accused of sexually assaulting a female in an apartment near Gillette College of the Northern Wyoming Community College District (NWCCD), around 10 p.m. on September 18, 2016.

Bigby-Williams played for Gillette College before transferring to the Ducks for the 2016-2017 season.

According to public records, police have known about the incident since September 28. UOPD detective Kathy Flynn and the Emerald have reached out to Bigby-Williams for comment but he hasn’t responded. Bigby-Williams’ attorney has also told Flynn to stop contacting his client.

‘After Flynn’s two failed attempts to interview Bigby-Williams by phone, Bigby-Williams’ attorney, Nick Carter, called Flynn asking her not to contact his client anymore,’ said UOPD spokesman Kelly McIver.

‘UOPD informed NWCCD police, and NWCCD police never requested further assistance.’

NWCCD police has been notified but hasn’t worked on furthing the investigation. NWCCD PD spokesperson Wendy Smith also said they can’t release any details regarding the investigation’s status.

The Emerald also stated that UO athletics as well as basketball coach Dana Altman, have known about the case since September.

In addition, the Oregon athletic department’s spokesman Greg Walker said the department was aware of UOPD’s request to interview Bigby-Williams, but nobody asked them why the asked to speak with him so no contact was established.

While UO athletics is aware of the investigation, UO President Michael Schill said he wasn’t aware of the incident when it happened and has declined to comment on the matter.

‘I don’t have any awareness of that,’ Schill said in a statement.

‘In any event, I can’t comment on an individual student. What if I was asked by another reporter about you being obnoxious? Would you want me to tell them that?’

President Schill has been in the media the last few weeks with recent increases in tuition and his recent comments regarding Bigby-William’s case have students continuing to be discouraged about how he’s affecting the university’s reputation.

Bigby-Williams requested a transfer from Oregon earlier this year and is on track to transfer to LSU in the fall.
