New UO Provost and Senior Vice President has just been announced

The University welcomes Jayanth R. Banavar

UO President Michael Schill has just announced that the distinguished physicist, Jayanth R. Banavar, will be taking over as the university’s new Provost and Senior Vice President.

The process for fulfilling this position has been underway since August.

Banavar is coming to the UO from the University of Maryland where he held the duty of dean of the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences since 2011.

According to President Schill, Banavar impressed him and other faculty members with his “stellar academic credentials, interdisciplinary track record, strategic mindset, creativity, and ability to make tough decisions with a touch of humor and personal warmth.” He will begin his position here in Eugene in July.

Banavar’s tasks will include working with President Schill, the deans, and the faculty to initiate the academic priorities for campus and for managing the resources to maintain those priorities.

The provost will also lead efforts to continue the recruitment of new faculty members, keep the present faculty, and manage the pursuit of a new academic budget system. President Schill is very confident in Banavar’s ability to take on his future role here at the University of Oregon.

His leadership skills and wisdom are expected to lead the university to reach new heights in the coming years.
