BREAKING: Students walk out in protest of Trump’s climate change denial

It’s led by the Climate Justice League

The Climate Justice League is staging a student walk out at the EMU amphitheater. The walk out is in response to Trump’s climate change denial and is a call to action for students to raise awareness towards preventing Climate Change. The event is put on by the Climate Justice League, an environmental direct action group on campus that works to combat environmental issues on a local level.

Today, their focus is on empowering students and encouraging them to get involved.

‘Today’s about standing up in resistance of the climate denial that’s happening on a national level with the new Trump administration and showing that we won’t back down,’ said Climate Justice League Co-Director Selena Blick.

Dozens of student groups lined up to speak, hoping to empower students to help take action against Climate Change. One of the speakers from UO’s Outdoor Recreation Program, Ellie Sullivan views outdoor rec leaders some of the biggest advocates in this movement.

‘Outdoor rec leaders are becoming some of the greatest advocates which is something that should happen,’ Sullivan said.

Overall, Blick and the Justice League hopes that after today, students will use them as a resource to get more involved with this topic.

‘We’re just hoping to empower students that they have a lot of support if they believe that it’s an important issue and give them ways to get involved,’ Blick said.

Additionally, Sullivan is just one of the many people that hope that students will continue to take action, but in an organized way.

‘The core message is that if we’re shouting so loudly and we can’t hear what we’re trying to protect then we’re not doing much good at all,” Sullivan added.
