Columbus named one of the most pro-immigrant cities in America

Mayor Andrew Ginther unveils plans to make Columbus a safer place for immigrants

The country has seen many changes put into effect over the weeks following the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States. Even before the transition into the new administration people began to speculate what and who could be at risk.  Muslims and people who hail from countries with a large population of Muslim people are the newest victims of discrimination.

A few days ago, the Mayor of Columbus, Andrew Ginther, President of the City Council, Zach Klein, and councilwoman Elizabeth Brown made public their plans to help all citizens of Columbus feel safe within the city—especially immigrants and refugees.

Mayor Ginther has made it clear that he, along with other city officials, opposes the recent actions taken by the president. His announcement was a huge step forward for the city of Columbus and those in opposition of not only the immigration ban, but the recent actions of the president. The plan came to fruition after months of cooperation and collaboration with members of the Columbus community looking to protect themselves and their neighbors.

Under this plan, the City Council will provide refugees and immigrants targeted by the immigration executive order with legal defense. Not only will the city provide legal help, but Mayor Ginther stated during a later press conference that local police will not be allowed to take part in the enforcement of the deportation force. In a time where many officials would be content to sit in silence Ginther refuses to submit, choosing to instead stand up for all citizens.

This is only the beginning of four years worth of changes, and as a city know for its diversity Columbus had made its stance clear. All people are welcome here.
