This daring duo are hoping to win the USG elections as a write-in

Are the USG candidates truly running unopposed?

USG elections are right around the corner and when you go to check those little boxes, you will be surprised to know that there are only one pair of candidates on the ballot.

However, Cin’Quan Haney and Curtis Henry are hoping that through their passion and advertising, they can overcome the unopposed candidates and win as a write-in.

Diversity has been a topic in everyone’s minds due to this election as most are arguing that USG is consistently an unopposed election within the group itself. Cin’Quan and Curtis hope to come into the Undergraduate Student Government as outsiders, to give students a choice outside of USG.

According to a demographic report of USG, 30.57 percent of USG members are involved in Greek life, which is an issue since only 11 percent of OSU’s entire population are in Greek life. Black and latino students are being underrepresented by 2.54 percent and 1.61 percent, while white and Asian-American students are overrepresented by 6 percent.

These two write-in hopefuls also claim they are not happy with the way USG seems to always elect the Deputy Chief of Staff and Senior Counselor as President and Vice President, saying that it “is simply continuing the same lackluster administration.”

Their Platform

Cin’Quan and Curtis are focused on safety, security, and diversity. Cin’Quan is an OSU football player who grew up in a household full of women, and is therefore very passionate about sexual assault issues. This is something that is absolutely essential as OSU still undergoes Title IX violations.

Cin’Quan hopes to tackle rape culture head-on “unlike it has been done in the past.” With the endorsement of the Women Student Initiatives he hopes to open a Women’s Center on campus, as OSU is the only Big Ten school without one. Their platforms include:

  • Increased focus on sexual violence prevention and improvement of policies already in place
  • Better mental health resources available for students
  • Increased off-campus safety measures

Cin’Quan and Curtis also have said they have a very “proactive understanding of social justice.” They like to think of themselves as Student Activists and hope that they can be on the front lines of social change at Ohio State. To help with diversity they say they will:

  • Institutionalize diversity
  • Implement implicit bias testing for USG members
  • Create a diversity lab on campus

They also hope that USG can become a much more accessible group for all students, not just the members. In order to help this issue, they campaign to:

  • Institute a Digital Technology Officer to connect all students with USG
  • Report weekly updates to all students
  • Hold monthly open forum town halls

These two hope to change the way that USG is run now and in the future.

Whether you would like to write in for Cin’Quan and Curtis or vote otherwise, you should keep an eye out for e-mails and instructions on voting. Voting begins next week, right before Spring Break on March 7th-9th and it is especially important that students have a great voting turn out.
