NYU alumni and faculty receive 16 nominations for 2017 Tony Awards

Go team

NYU may not have a football team, but where it lack in tailgates and team spirit, it makes up for in Tony nominations. This year NYU received 16 Tony nominations for the categories of producing, writing, acting, and many of the small categories that we tune out of (sorry lighting design).

18 NYU Alumni are affiliated with the nominated musical Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 and seven of these alumni received Tony nominations for their respective roles in the production. This musical itself is also slated to win for best musical this year, as well for a slew of other awards.

Rachel Chavkin from the Tisch class of 2002 received a nomination for Best Director for The Great Comet of 1812. Alongside this work, Chavkin is also the artistic director and one of the founders of the Brooklyn based non-profit theatre ensemble TEAM.

Among the other NYU nominees this year were Brandon Uranowitz for Best Actor in a featured role in a musical for the musical Falsettos, as well as the youngest NYU alumni to be nominated Caitlin Clements (Tisch ’13) and Hunter Carlton (Stern ’13), who are both producers for the Best Musical nominated Dear Evan Hansen.

NYU alumni and faculty will also be competitive in the categories for Best Play, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Choreography, with eight nominations in total across these categories.

Congratulations to the entire #DearEvanHansen family for 9 #TonyNoms, including Best Musical. #TonyAwards2017
