U.S District Attorney for the Southern District Preet Bharara to join NYU law

His residency at NYU law begins at the end of his time as a U.S District Attorney

As announced today by the NYU School of Law, Preet Bharara – the current U.S attorney for the Southern District of New York – will join NYU law as a distinguished scholar in residence beginning April 1st of this year. He joins the law school – recently ranked the sixth best in the world – at the end of his tenure as a U.S District Attorney, which has been one of the longest for anyone holding that position.

Bharara has been keeping busy during his time with the Southern District. During his tenure, he has brought many political corruption prosecutions against politicians in the city in addition to a number of prosecutions of financial crimes, including cases against Bernie Madoff and his associates and Toyota, from whom he secured a record-breaking $1.2 billion financial penalty that ensured a tightening of their safety regulations.

Bharara is a graduate of Harvard College and Columbia Law but is also no stranger to NYU law, having been its JD convocation in 2013.

In a statement released by the law school, Bharara said: “I’m honored to join the NYU School of Law, one of the great educational institutions in America, and I welcome the chance to contribute in such a thoughtful setting. I am thrilled for this opportunity to continue addressing the issues I so deeply care about—criminal and social justice, honest government, national security, civil rights, and corporate accountability, to name a few.” He also confirmed his new position on Twitter today, proclaiming how proud he was to join the institution.
