Pharrell is speaking at NYU right now

Before he took the stage he got everyone dancing with his music video Freedom

Anticipation filled the room of New York University’s Town Hall as Clive Davis students and NYU staff awaited Pharrell to take the stage.

Jason King’s introduction reminded us of the impact The Neptunes (Pharrell’s Duo) had on music at the turn of the century. He continues to push boundaries, and will do so at Tisch.

Pharrell said: “It’s humbling to be in a room filled with great minds.”

Pharrell walked us through the creative process behind “Freedom”. He emphasized the importance of paying attention to humanity and natural beauty.

He said, “It started out as a conversation about love.”

The conversation with Pharrell reminds us of the amazing benefits of attending Clive Davis.  While most NYU students are spending their Monday nights grinding away in Bobst, the Clive students are talking with Billboard’s 2010 Producer of the Decade. Yeah . . . no big deal.

He added that A Tribe Called Quest’s song Bonita Applebum was the track which inspired him to become a musician.

And on producing, the psychedelic artist said: “Just have fun. That’s usually where it ends up being cool.”
