NC State students hold blackout and sit-in at yesterday’s game

The peaceful protests continue

At Saturday’s football game versus Wake Forest NC State students held a “Black Out and Sit-In” event to show their disapproval of racial tensions on campus. Over 50 people participated in this protest.

During the National Anthem fists were held up to signify pride in the African American race.

When it was time for the NCSU Alma Mater, the protestors chose to sit down. According to the event’s Facebook page, this was designed to be “another student display against the systematic racism POC [people of color] experience everyday.”

Students have planned protests because of the group messages that were released earlier this week. Screenshots of a GroupMe exposed a small group of male students who were inappropriately discussing the race of other students using offensive language and it was determined to be a hate crime.

But because of the First Amendment, administration was not able to punish them in any major way. The two main boys wrote an apology and it was emailed to the entire student body, but many were disappointed at the lack of action and started protesting to bring the discrimination to light.
