Update: Umichmakeouts issues public apology
Still no word as to who were the troll(s) behind the account
A controversial Instagram account called @umichmakeouts came under fire recently for making defamatory statements about a Umich sorority, calling them “desperate” as well as ranking them lowest among other sororities. While some enjoyed the account, others have criticized it as a vehicle for slut-shaming and cyber bullying. Several statements targeting the sorority prompted backlash from students and from Panhel.
In response, umichmakeouts has issued an apology.
The statement reads, “I regret my inappropriate comments toward the ladies of [the sorority], to sororities and Greek Life in general. My motivation in making this account was not to cause anyone any trouble. I thought it might be fun and interesting and something people can use to brighten up their day. And for the people who get features it brings them a few moments of fame and joy to them and for me that is the reward, nothing else. I realize now how much I have overstepped my boundaries. I guess I simply lost sight of the purpose and incredible reach this account now has. What I’ve said in the past had been foolish and this is my formal apology. So, I hope I can go back to doing what made people happy.”
Took you long enough.
