University official confirms campus illness is ‘very likely’ Norovirus

Fewer than 30 students have sought treatment so far

Since Monday night, multiple Umich students have reportedly fallen ill after having dinner at South Quad, complaining of flu-like symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. Some speculated it was food poisoning from undercooked chicken, while others feared it was a virus.

A representative from Public Affairs, Kim Broekhuizen, has now released a statement confirming the illness is “likely caused by a virus.”

Though the official lab results won’t be in until Friday, she said it’s “very likely” that it’s Norovirus, which also circulated campus last spring.

Broekhuizen said the university is “taking all necessary precautions and has instituted virus-related cleaning procedures in all dining facilities and all residence halls,” so hopefully no more students get sick.

According to the statement, fewer than 30 students have sought treatment for the bug so far.
