Michigan State’s women’s basketball team has huge potential

Let’s have a look at the talent on the court

Although Michigan State’s men’s basketball team is all the talk these days due to the high-ranked freshman players, Spartan fans cannot overlook the women’s basketball which is currently 7-2 in their pre-season. The team is very diverse and intricate and holds a lot of different skills and abilities that they bring to the court. Let’s have a look at the talent on the court.

Taryn McCutcheon

After Morgan Green was dismissed from the Michigan State women’s basketball team due to “violating team rules,” Taryn McCutcheon, number four, stepped up her game to fill the open spot on the court.

McCutcheon is a freshman from East Lansing. She is a 5-5 guard, and for a first year, she has an incredible basketball IQ. McCutcheon is now a starter and leads the Spartans’ offense as point guard.

Coach Suzy Merchant is very intrigued with her ability to assist people on the court, but still score for the team. Merchant also describes her with a “nice poise”, the way she carries herself is a good characteristic of a leader and that is what they need on the court.

Tori Jankoska

Today is my last, first game of the season in Breslin… time really did fly by. Not taking a minute of this year for granted. I've gotten to live out my dream to play at Michigan State that I've had since I was a little girl. Blessed beyond my imagination?? War Time with my girls?

Tori Jankoska plays a significant part of the team. Coach Merchant explains Jankoska with a mouthful of positivity. Merchant talks about the variety of skills the player conveys on the court. Tori can aid the defense with her speed and aggressiveness, and also help the Spartans offensively, driving the ball down the lanes and getting inside.

As a senior guard, she is a crucial role model for the new members. She is the Spartan’s lead scorer. Her shooting is outstanding behind the arc, but it doesn’t stop there. She can lead the offense with her communication skills, too.

Taya Reimer

Because it's game day this weekend and I haven't played in a year ??? I'm so excited to go to war this year with my sisters #GoGreen ????

Taya Reimer is a senior forward, and a transfer from Notre Dame. She is massively skilled and proved that to Coach Merchant in the first few games of pre-season ball. She is described as a winner wherever she’s played. She was a McDonald’s All-American player and knows how to keep up and win under a high level of pressure and stress. Her leadership on and off the court is helping the team’s chemistry and helping them bond. As for her on-court assets, her height, six-foot, four-inches, is a huge help as a forward. She can fight for her position on the block and aid the Spartans in many wins this season.

The 2016-17 Michigan State women’s basketball team is filled with incredible and diverse abilities that give the Spartans the edge it will take to go far in the season. According to Suzy Merchant, “It’s a work in progress this time of year.” It’s just a matter of putting it together to create a real threat in the conference and on the court.
