MSU hockey honors previous head coach on home ice

Spartans will, honor Ron Mason

This season the Michigan State University hockey team will be honoring the previously head coach, Ron Mason, by having his initials painted onto their helmets. At yesterday’s media day, the team unveiled the helmets that will be worn throughout this upcoming season.

Mason has some pretty prestigious awards that go along with his name. He was the second most winning coach in school history and led the Spartans from 1966-2002. His final record was 924-380-83. He still continued to stay close to the university after coaching by becoming the Athletic Director from 2002-2007. Sadly, he passed away back in June.

When Mark Hollis, the current Athletic Director, spoke to the Lansing State Journal yesterday, he spoke very highly of Mason. “Ron made an enormous impact on the entire campus and community from the moment he arrived at Michigan State in 1979. Not only was his influence tremendous at MSU, but it also extended to the game of hockey as a whole. We are honored to remember Ron over the upcoming season, knowing he impacted so many people in a positive way.”

The helmets aren’t the only way that the Spartans intend on honoring Ron this year. His initials will also be painted into the ice behind each goal for this season.
