The University of Maryland was just ranked #82 on the Forbes List of America’s Top Colleges in 2016. This list also showed that UMD was ranked #14 among the top 15 public universities on the list.

UMD’s high ranking by Forbes isn’t necessarily a surprise. Just this past May, seventeen UMD students and alumni were awarded Fulbright Grants. The Fulbright Program is the U.S. Government’s international educational exchange program and is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State.

In addition, UMD has multiple degree programs that are ranked top 10 in the country including: Information Systems, Educational Psychology, Aerospace Engineering, and Counseling and Personnel Services. Also, the Robert H. Smith School of Business and the A. James Clark School of Engineering both are ranked in the top 25 of the nation.

Besides academics, UMD boasts 20 NCAA Division I teams. Eight UMD Athletics programs have won a combined total of 42 National Championships. Also, Maryland is just one of two schools in history to have won the NCAA Championship in both men’s and women’s basketball.

While many schools have beautiful campuses with big green spaces, UMD’s McKeldin Mall is actually the largest academic mall in the United States, taking up nine whole acres in the center of campus.

Lastly, in terms of the Big 10, UMD outranked Penn State, IU, Rutgers, Nebraska, Minnesota, Michigan State, Purdue, OSU, and Iowa. However, we still have competition to beat UM, Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Illinois next year.
