Every reason the University of Maryland is the best university

Go Terps!

I’m not going to lie. Even though I am a happy student at the University of Maryland, there were many colleges that I applied to. I was accepted to many and rejected from some. I chose UMD, however, and I am so happy that I did.

The amazing academics

One of the most important reasons the University of Maryland is such a great school to go to is that the academics are unparalleled. According to U.S. News & World Report, Maryland is ranked #19 out of all public research institutions in the country.

This is for many reasons. Firstly, we have an abundance of majors to suit your liking. These range anywhere from economics to biology to journalism. Our faculty here at the university have won many awards. A few of my professors in the journalism department have even won Emmys. Many other professors at our school have won other awards or have held leadership positions that make them astounding in their field. I am so grateful that I go to a school that has amazing academics along with the affordable price tag that comes along with a public university.

“I like how it is close to my home and I think it really has good academic qualities,” said hopeful student Bess Copsey. “I want to be an anthropologist and that’s a really good place to study becoming one.”

“I applied to Maryland because it was in state, a great engineering school and was the perfect size school for me and when I got in, I knew it was the best choice for my future,” said freshman Brad Casto. “I loved every aspect of the campus and it seemed like a place I would fit in well.”

The beautiful campus

We all are quite aware that we go to college on a gorgeous campus. We have, whether it is to our discretion or not, taken a picture of McKeldin Mall and uploaded it to social media. With every step we take, we have to smile at our surroundings and thank our lucky stars that we were admitted to such a magnificent school.

“Founded in 1856, University of Maryland’s 19th century roots are blended with an aura of modern appeal through our beautiful residence halls. Plus, McKeldin Mall is one of the biggest malls in the nation and has a wonderful aesthetic with the ODK fountain at its center. Our campus is lined with beautiful trees, intricate architecture and school pride,” said sophomore Andy Schell.

The sports program

If the academics are not outstanding enough for you to consider applying to this great university, the athletics should be. College is supposed to be the best four years of your life. Many of the sports, such as basketball which is in its season now, are nationally ranked. This allows students to attend multiple tournaments in which we compete against other schools. I am very fortunate to see the games that our school participates in. I love all of the athletes that go to our school. I, of course, have a little crush on Melo Trimble who is on the basketball team too!

Greek life

Additionally, the social life at our university is unparalleled. I have had an amazing time inside and outside of our university. This includes the clubs that I am involved in and also the fun times with my friends. There are many opportunities to get involved no matter what suits your interest. The University of Maryland has 25 fraternities as a part of its Greek life in the International Fraternity Council (IFC). The university also has 15 sororities on campus that are a part of the PanHellenic Association (PHA). As a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, I can tell you seriously that Greek life allows you to meet new people, gain friends, get academic help, and obtain many different volunteer opportunities. All of this will look great on your resume, especially if you obtain a leadership position.

The diverse social life

If Greek life does not appeal to you, there are 165 academic clubs that you may join your time at Maryland. This includes the Academic Quiz Team, The Tab and Muslim Interscholastic Tournament.

With all of the opportunities to be engaged in, it is not hard to have a great time at this university. I have had amazing times with my sorority and the publications that I am involved with and I am so grateful to be a part of my teams.

“It’s always been a dream school ever since I was little. As soon as I got in, I knew this would be my home for the next four years,” said student Ryan Steinburg.
