JMU confirms students studying abroad in Belgium are safe

Upcoming trip to Brussels has been cancelled though

After Tuesday’s terrorist attacks in Brussels, Belgium, JMU’s student news paper, The Breeze, has confirmed that all 33 students and staff studying abroad in Antwerp, Belgium are safe. The university continues to monitor the situation to determine what and if any itinerary changes may need to be made.

According to The New York Times, at least 31 people were killed and over 270 were injured after explosions at Brussels’ main international airport and at a subway station took place. Two suicide bombers who carried out the deadly attacks have been identified as brothers with criminal records.

Bill Wyatt, JMU’s Director of Communications and university spokesperson, says the students were scheduled to travel to Brussels next week, which is about a 35 to 45 minute train ride from Antwerp. The trip since has been cancelled.
