The most stereotypical JMU Yik Yaks

‘Some regrets’

Yik Yak is a way to anonymously tell your entire student body about your latest thoughts, jokes, and happenings on campus. If you’re bored in class or just want to know what people are talking about, Yik Yak’s got your back in letting you in on the latest scoop.

While people post about pretty much everything, some general trends can be seen in the types of yaks JMU students have.

Here are just a few of the most common posts.

The desperate hookup

It is almost guaranteed that if you go on Yik Yak, especially on a weekend night, there will be at least one person looking for a hookup. The amount of people who have actually found success in this are slim, yet the posts seem to continue to show up without fail. I don’t know about you, but this idea seems to be just a little sketchy and probably not the best way to find someone- just a thought, but you do you.

The SpongeBob fanatic

It is a known fact around here that SpongeBob yaks are a popular favorite. The show has never been more relevant to us until now- who knew our favorite childhood cartoon could describe college life so perfectly?

The person who actually has their life figured out

These are the true productive members of society who know what they want to accomplish and will work hard to do it. They’re probably the president of a club and have their next internship lined up, ready to take on the world.

And those who…well, not so much

Not everyone has got it all planned out yet, and that’s alright.  Sometimes sweatpants and Netflix is enough productivity for one day, right?

The one who always shares their relationship thoughts

Ah young love, why must it be so difficult sometimes? Good thing we have Yik Yak, where all of those confused and broken hearts can share their deepest feelings with thousands of anonymous people. And chances are what one person is going through, another is probably experiencing a similar situation. So go on and tell us about your love life, there’s bound to be someone who can help you out.

The people who party hard

There are tons of parties every weekend, which inevitably leads to some pretty hung over people and funny yaks. Countless posts about frat parties, crazy drunk stories, and maybe some regrets the next morning always accompany Friday and Saturday nights. These are definitely an entertaining way to hear about on what went down over the weekend.

And the people who really party hard

Then you’ve got your hardcore partiers- that’s right, the ones who stay in and watch High School Musical or do laundry at 1:00 in the morning. Stay tuned, cause they’ll have some pretty insane stories to tell the next day.

The reality check

College is fun and all, and while it might be nice to think that it would be possible to just hang out and have a good time, the truth is that there is at least some work involved in coming to school. In the midst of friends, clubs and activities, classes sometimes take the back burner in the list of priorities. Sometimes we just need a little reality check to bring us back to what actually matters- like this person who didn’t get the burrito they asked for.

The storyteller

If you want to hear a good story, look no farther than your local Yak feed. From drunken stories to a recollection of the past, you can find just about anything because there’s always someone with a tale to tell.

The political debater

Especially during election season, it seems as if there is always someone wanting to strike up a political conversation. These usually entail a one sided argument that inevitably causes a long debate in the comments section. No one usually wins these debates, but political expression is an important part of being an adult, so I say debate as much as you want.

The bad roommate

And lastly, there is usually some kind of complaint about a roommate. No one is perfect, so roommates are going to get on each other’s nerves once in a while (or everyday for some). Yik Yak is where you can tell people all about it and let some of that frustration out. Let’s just hope that Yak isn’t about you.
