Iowa freshman Sean Wu dies at hospital after ‘seizure’

The university’s statement said he had been drinking the day he died

Earlier today the University of Iowa issued a mass email to the student body announcing the death of freshman student Sean Wu of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

After contacting the UI’s Office of Strategic Communication for more information, Media Relations Director Anne Bassett confirmed his identity to The Tab, and shared the following:

We are saddened to share we’ve lost a member of the Hawkeye Community. Our thoughts are with his family and friends and we are respecting their wish for privacy at this time.

On Saturday, April 8, 2017, at approximately 10:44 pm, University of Iowa Police received a report of an unresponsive male at Daum Residence Hall. The caller stated the male had been drinking earlier in the evening. At approximately 10:47 pm, UI officers arrived at the scene.

Witnesses stated the male, who was an 18-year-old University of Iowa student and Daum resident, suddenly tensed up, as if he was having a seizure and collapsed.

The individual was transported to the hospital, where he later died. The cause of death remains under investigation, including a standard toxicology report.

As always, the university encourages students to reach out if they are in need of support. Students can contact the University Counseling Services at (319) 335-7294 or Student Care and Assistance at (319) 335-1162.
