There was a huge ‘Love Trumps Hate’ protest in downtown Iowa City tonight

The crowd was even bigger than last time

Another “Love Trumps Hate” rally occurred late tonight in the Ped Mall in front of the Sheraton hotel.

Several hundred people gathered to protest Donald Trump’s newly elected presidency, a much larger crowd than the group that gathered at the Pentacrest last week.

This time, the protesters were not made up of only students, but also of veterans, disabled, families with children, and other residents of Iowa City.

The huge crowd gathered and rallied together, repeated chanting “Love Trumps Hate.”

Speakers stepped forward to share messages of unity and encouraged everyone to promote love for all members of the community.

Many carried signs, and even children could be seen waving flags as they sat upon the shoulders of their parents. “Iowa City loves immigrants”, “Veterans against hate”, and “I will not stay silent so you can stay comfortable” were just a few of the sayings written on posters held by protesters.

The rally did not stand stationary in the Ped Mall.

After speakers finished sharing with the community, rally leaders began marching down Clinton Street toward the capitol on the Pentacrest, and the crowd followed.

The exceptionally large mass of people spilled over from the sidewalk onto the street, and cars and passers-by stopped to watch as the protesters moved farther into downtown Iowa City.
