An honest Georgetown acceptance letter

Forget the Ivy’s, you’re a Hoya now

Dear Accepted Student:

Congratulations! You have been accepted to the Georgetown University Class of 2021! We know how hard you have worked to get here – you’re probably in the top five-percent of your class, in several honors societies, taken the ACT and the SAT nine times apiece, and your resume is nine miles long (although we didn’t really read it all). We understand that you may still be heartbroken after Ivy decision day, and we hope that this acceptance letter provides some comfort to you.

We can’t wait to welcome you to DC. Soon, running into famous politicians or seeing them in Gaston Hall will be normal thing for you. Even Secretary Kerry lives just a few blocks from our Front Gates. In the weeks before you come to the Hilltop, make sure that you have your internship on the Hill lined up for the fall.

A Congressional internship is a graduation requirement for many Hoyas now, from Government majors to Accounting majors. You will be expected to handle a part-time internship schedule in addition to being a full-time student with 12-15 credits per semester. It is a wonderful experience, and we cannot wait to see where DC life takes you.

We expect you’re probably excited for your excited new life as a college student. You’re going to buy a new bed cover, and a load of smart clothes for your classes. But don’t worry about them too much. At first you’ll spend all of your time in bars with other students, and then by surprise we’ll spring midterms on you. You’ll think “but you were so welcoming initially, why are you being so mean.” From then on we’ll keep playing games with you. Letting you slip into a state of comfortability and then before you know it, BAM, testing again.

DC and the Georgetown neighborhood features one of the best varieties of restaurants on the East Coast. Fortunately, you won’t go broke on food because you will be bound to your meal plan freshman year. We have one dining hall on campus, Leo’s, as well as some retail locations on campus like Cosi, if you don’t mind the wait.

We also have a wide variety of student organizations on campus, from language clubs to theater groups to clubs that provide on-campus jobs and internships. Remember how excited you were after your first tour of Georgetown to join Blue & Gray or the Corp? Your tour guide probably forgot to mention that it’s harder to get into those organizations than to get into Georgetown. Fortunately, there are a couple clubs and organizations that you haven’t even thought of yet that can’t wait to welcome you into their families.

You are about to embark on an incredible journey here on the Hilltop. Some days, you may wonder why you were even accepted in the first place. Just because your peers are from exotic places or spent a summer building wells in Rwanda or are on a first-name basis with members of president’s cabinet doesn’t make your place at Georgetown any less significant. Thank you for helping round out our class of 2021, especially if you are from South Dakota or Alaska.

All the best,

Georgetown Admissions
