How Florida State students reacted to the election results

‘We need to support and help one another now more than ever’

Walking around Florida State today was an interesting event. Some students visibly excited, while others seemingly void of emotion, overall there seemed to be an eerie sense of quiet and calm over FSUs campus. We wanted to know how students on campus reacted to the results, so we asked them to describe how they feel about last nights election.

McKayla, Senior, Creative Writing, Anthropology and Italian

The thing I’ve been thinking about the most since I realized that our next president would be Trump is the shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. That was the first time that I was really confronted with the imminent, physical, real threat to my life because of my queerness. When Trump was elected, I was again reminded that my queerness is something that millions of my fellow countrymen (including and especially our new vice president) despise about me, and that my rights and safety are again at risk because of hateful, queerphobic bigots who put empty rhetoric above the interests of the people around them.

Alyssa, Sophomore, Criminology

I have decided, though I didn’t vote for him, I won’t degrade him. At the end of the day he is our president and we have to respect that.

Rashad, Sophomore, International Affairs and Political Science

This election is not a victory for Donald Trump. It is a victory for hate, racism and Islamophobia. We have come to a point in our history where we elect those ideologies.

Chloe, Junior, Biological Science

I sincerely hope this serves as a historical reminder that shortcomings and corruption in political establishments, such as the DNC that undermine trust in voters, leaves a door open for vitriolic, xenophobic, and misogynistic ideology to permeate through our society.

Stephanie, Junior, Media and Communications Studies

I am embarrassed by what our country has done in this election, and I’m worried for my friends who belong in the marginalized groups that Donald Trump has targeted throughout his campaign. They do not deserve to be afraid in their own country, but that is what has happened.

Chase, Sophomore, International Affairs

This entire election, to me, has been about intimidation tactics from the left, which is why I never put a trump sticker on my car for fear of it being vandalized. On November 8th, the silent majority spoke with their hearts, and the silent majority broke the system.

Vanessa Marquez, Sophomore, English

I am completely heart broken over the results of the election. I fear not only for my fellow Latino community, but for all minorities alike. We need to support and help one another now more than ever.

Isabel, Junior, Communications and English

I’m mostly sad and just pretty much ashamed of the people in our country. But I think it’s important to use this shock to promote the importance of actually voting and being involved in politics. We haven’t failed yet, this is just a major obstacle in the road to progress.
