Why college is so much better than high school

As Asher Roth would say, I love college

The transition from high school to college is a huge deal. It comes with anxiety as well as happiness. Many can’t wait to leave their hometowns and be free from adults telling them what to do. Although many others are sad to leave their parents and their friends from home, it is an exciting adventure and it can be the best time of your life. College is a great time to meet other people with different backgrounds and stories, and you’ll also learn more about yourself.

The most important thing you’ll learn in college? It’s way better than high school. The tears you wept when you graduated will never return once you are in college for a week — here’s why.

There are fewer classes

In high school, you had a few classes in the morning, then a lunch period, then a few classes after that. That could get pretty hard (especially when you’re hungry all the time). But at FSU, instead of six classes like most high schools, there’s only four. Four classes total. Some people have Monday and Wednesday off. That’s only three days of school a week. Enough said.

You get to choose your own classes

It’s the best thing being able to not only choose your classes, but pick the times as well. You could have your day start at 1pm if you really wanted to. No more waking up at 6am every morning. Even 8am classes seem bearable when you think about how early you had to get up during high school. There’s no limit on what classes you can take either: There’s a class on the Hunger Games, Beyonce, or even selfies. I think that sounds a whole lot better than American History, let’s be honest.

There is more freedom

In college, you can literally do whatever you want after class. You can go to a café, go back to sleep or, if you’re feeling adventurous, go to St. Mark’s Lighthouse. Basically, it doesn’t feel like you’re in jail like high school did. Especially when your campus is beautiful and always looks like it belongs on a postcard.

When you finish a test you don’t have to stay and wait until everyone finishes

Those kids who take the whole class period to finish their test when everyone else was done thirty minutes ago? In college, you don’t have to wait for them anymore. There’s no more waiting for the teacher to collect everyone’s test. Once you’re done, you can leave. Thank you Jesus.

You can eat whenever you want

No more going to three classes and then having an assigned lunchtime. After class, you can go back to your dorm (or wherever you want) to get food. You don’t have to pack a lunch — unless your schedule is super busy — but most people try not to schedule classes that way. There’s a wide variety of options ranging from Subway to Chick-fil-A to Einstein’s.

You live in a dorm or an apartment

I think this speaks for itself. No parents to tell you to clean your room or take out the trash. And if you’re not a bather…then no parents to tell you to take a shower. (But I don’t recommend that.)

There is always something to do

Whether it be going to a bar, club, sorority/fraternity house, or even just going to your dorm, there are always things going on and people moving constantly. There is no more anxiously looking for a party every weekend — at college, everything is always popping. You log onto Facebook and there’s promos for bars and clubs everywhere on your newsfeed, so it’s pretty easy to know what’s happening that night. There’s also socials for fraternities and sororities and waltzes which make things a little more entertaining.

You can wear whatever you want

Although not all high schools had uniforms, there were always some restrictions on what you could and couldn’t wear. But not in college. Most of the time, I can be found in leggings and a T-shirt (except when it’s cold). I’ve seen a variety of different outfits — very short jean shorts, bro tanks, crop tops, and even people in their clothes from the night before. That’s the great thing, though: You can look however you want and people don’t really care.

You can eat/drink in class

I am totally in love with this one, because I wasn’t allowed to eat in class in high school. Some teachers don’t care and some just can’t see you eating because of how big the class is, and that’s great. I came into class one time with a whole meal from Jersey Mike’s and the teacher did not care at all. Learning and eating at the same time… what could be better?

And best of all…there’s way more fish in the sea

Every day you see different people. Options, options, options. In high school you knew everyone, so no one was attractive to you because you knew them way too well. But now you only know a few guys or girls and the rest of campus is one big opportunity to meet someone amazing.
