UF campus closed through Monday due to Hurricane Irma

Finally

The Gainesville campus will be closed on Sunday and Monday in response to Hurricane Irma, a UF alert confirmed today.

Irma is said to be one of the most powerful hurricanes in the Atlantic, currently a category 5 and expected to remain the same or lower to a 4 by the time it hits Florida.

Florida Governor Rick Scott and Donald Trump have declared a state of emergency. Gainesville residents and students have been scrambling for hurricane supplies in preparation for the storm, with water being the most sought-after item in stores.

The following are shelters for Alachua County. More will open as needed.

Newberry Archery Center (for the general population)

24880 NW 16 Avenue, Newberry

Gainesville Senior Center (for those with special needs)

5701 NW 34 Blvd, Gainesville
