This story is developing

Shands is taking in patients after a serious car accident on I75 outside Gainesville.

A tractor-trailer struck an RV with a flat tire, resulting in a collision that left one dead and six injured, The Gainesville Sun reports.

A UF alert went out earlier to warn the student body that the hospital was treating “an emergency with several casualties.”

A spokesperson for Shands Hospital said: “The UF Health emergency response mass casualty plan was activated today at approximately 1:15PM due to a multivehicle accident on Interstate 75 in south Alachua County.

“Three patients arrived at UF Health Shands Hospital and are being cared for by UF Health faculty and staff.”

UF freshman Adam Edwards was stuck in the traffic following the accident.

He told The Tab: “It was terrible. The traffic was at a standstill. By the time I passed the clean-up crews were all that was left.”
