Victories and failures of UF Alerts

Like the Boy Who Cried Wolf…

UF students appreciate knowing when and where a crime is happening and that UFPD is taking care of it.  What’s frustrating for me and 50,000 other students is when UF Alerts randomly interrupts our sleeping, studying, and free-time with the basic details of a potentially dangerous crime. Most times we’re left guessing whether or not a crime is solved because the alerts usually end when the crime scene is “all clear” and not when the criminal is caught. After a while, if we’re not paranoid about our safety we get desensitized and start to ignore the alerts. We don’t want to get rid of it we just want a few things to change.

Ambiguous Descriptions

It must be hard to get descriptions of criminals on the run, but sometimes UF Alert isn’t easy to help

At least it says more than the bat signal.

No really, these are our school colors

Terrifying Cases left open

Eventually, these cases get resolved long after a UF alert is necessary and you can actually go out of your way to check UF’s public crime log here, but in the moment it’s hard to feel comfortable.

And this guy’s tweet is pretty on point

They were probably looking for Santa.

Gainesville and Guns– too many armed robberies

 They always feel redundant

They graduate with you

Remember you can text STOP ALL to UF Alerts after you graduate or whenever you want to turn them off

That’s easy…

We’d like to see more of these!

In all honesty, UF Alert is a great thing with a few flaws that most campuses don’t even have! I’m sure the staff behind the UF Alerts are learning how to improve their messages with each crime, so let’s not forget when they get it right.

Helping us get out of class.

What??

Making sure we know about emergencies, not just crimes

UF Alerts are a lot. Too much, maybe. It’s like the Boy Who Cried Wolf…scream when we really need to know what’s going on.
