The National Council for Negro Women is a new club on campus

Have you heard about it yet?

The Emory University Chapter of the National Council for Negro Women is a new organization on campus. We strive to provide a space for women to become advocates of change for themselves, their communities, and female unity . One of the goals for NCNW is to, “lead, develop, and advocate for women as they support their families and communities”.

Organizations like these are crucial for our  communities because women of color need support systems where they can gain self-reliance and self-love.

If you desire a space that promotes your uniqueness and the improvement of female relations on campus, you should consider joining NCNW!

All women of any color, ethnicity, and orientation are welcomed to join to become a part of a growing impactful influence at Emory. But first, there are some things you should know about us.

Our Founder

Mary McLeod Bethune, our founder, was born on July 10, 1875. As she progressed through her career in education, she founded the Bethune-Cookman College in 1929. Bethune “could not rest to see the unharnessed womanpower among our women”; so, she founded NCNW on December 5, 1935 in New York City along with 28 other women leaders. They wanted to form an “organization of organizations” that would open opportunities for women in areas of social justice, education, and community service.

Also, Bethune was the first African-American woman to be involved in the White House where she assisted four presidents. She had a great impact on Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal Government plan. She served as the informal “race leader at large” and organized the Federal Council on Negro Affairs and Negro Affairs for National Youth Administration.
