2020 vision: We asked incoming freshmen what they’re expecting from Dartmouth

Do you take Phil Hanlon seriously? ‘To be honest, I have not heard of him’

Dartmouth’s early decision acceptance letters have been sent out, and the class of 2020 are brimming with excitement at the prospect of hitting the Big Green.

I trawled through the Dartmouth College Class of 2020 Facebook page to get a closer look at the individuals who will soon comprise the next generation of Dartmouth students. Out of the hundreds of messages I sent to incoming students, 10 students agreed to be interviewed.

How did you react to being admitted to Dartmouth?

I should probably start off by telling you that I was recruited to Dartmouth for track & field so my answers to these questions will be a little different from the norm.

It didn’t come as a surprise to me because I was recruited but I can say that it gave me a feeling of assurance to know that it was finally official.

What are you looking forward to most about your freshman fall?

I’d have to say meeting new people and trying new things. I feel like college gives students an opportunity to really explore their interests and figure out who they are and there is no better place than Dartmouth to do those exact things.

What are you looking forward to least?

I am dreading the cold weather. I am from North Carolina and I have lived here my entire life and I absolutely hate cold weather. I am hoping that I can get adjusted to it before my four years at Dartmouth are complete.

Do you know what you would like to study?

At this point I honestly have no clue. I had a couple ideas (Forensic Science, Biomedical Engineering, Global Health, Economics) but I always change my mind ever so often. Dartmouth has a lot to offer in terms of academics so I am sure I will be happy with whatever I decide.

How did you decide to apply to Dartmouth early decision?

Most athletic recruits apply early decision, especially for track & field.

How did you react to being admitted to Dartmouth?

I am very excited to become part of the Dartmouth family next year. The first thing I did when I was admitted into Dartmouth was to share the news with my parents. My dad is a graduate from Dartmouth while my mom is a graduate from Harvard. I was very excited but also very grateful to be given this opportunity to study at Dartmouth.

What are you looking forward to most about your freshman fall?

I am looking forward most to being part of the women’s soccer team at Dartmouth and also meeting other students.

What are you looking forward to least?

I am looking forward least to the actual school work and exams.

Do you know what you would like to study?

I have no idea.

How did you decide to apply to Dartmouth early decision?

I am very fortunate to have a family that supports me in my academics and athletics.  When I was offered scholarships to play soccer at various colleges, my parents encouraged me to look at the school itself, not just the soccer program. They inspired me to pick a school that would invest in my future and that would suit me as student as well as an athlete. I attended numerous I.D. camps throughout my sophomore year to get a better understanding of what I wanted in a college. With all this in mind, I knew I had found exactly what I was looking for in a school when I toured Dartmouth College and attended their I.D. soccer camp. I was thrilled when, at the end of the camp, Coach Ron Rainey offered me full support to play soccer at Dartmouth.
