Hunter under investigation for mishandling sexual violence

They are one of 11 New York schools

Hunter is one of 11 New York schools under federal investigation for mishandling Title IX cases.

In the last two years, there has been an increase in the number of colleges in New York under federal investigation for their handling of rape and sexual assault cases. The number has increased from four colleges to 25 in January 2016, causing concerns with how sexual assault is and was being treated on campus.

Better reporting is being cited as the reason for the spike in incidents, with sexual assault not being undermined at all as it is still considered a huge issue on American campuses.

Under Title IX , a civil rights law surrounding gender rights, schools must have a coordinator or supervisor oversee the schools handling of reported cases. Employees are trained to respond to incidents as well and Title IX has helped students in the past by being able to define sexual assault where a victim could not due to drugs and alcohol.

Federal investigations can start by a few unsolved cases or retracted cases and does not imply that a specific school has more or less sexual violence. Complaints can be filed from individuals or organizations as well.

CUNY Hunter is currently one of the schools under investigation for having an open sexual assault case.

It is one of several schools under investigation in New York, joined by Bard, Barnard, Canisius, Columbia, Cornell, Corning Community College, Elmira, Hamilton, New York University School of Medicine, Pace, Polytechnic Institute of NYU, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Skidmore, St. John’s University, Union, The Pratt Institute, the University of Rochester and the State University of New York schools at Albany, Stony Brook, Brockport, Purchase and Buffalo State College.
