NYC could be getting street cars

I guess everyone’s tired of the subway

Mayor de Blasio has announced plans for a streetcar line which runs up and down the east river and connect parts of Brooklyn and Queens.  The plan is set to be unveiled today and reports say the line will be almost 16 miles long.

Building the line will cost about $2.5 billion, which is far cheaper than constructing another subway line.

Once the street car line is put into place trips between Dumbo and Greenpoint will be only 24 minutes long and commuters won’t have to worry about travelling through Manhattan to connect from Brooklyn to Queens.

21-year-old Hunter student Abrar Ullah fully supported the idea. He said: ” I live in queens, and there are relatively very few trains that directly go to Brooklyn from queens without detouring through the city.

“It honestly never made sense to me, especially considering that both boroughs are so huge and are alongside one another.

“I just hope that with the massive amounts of vehicular and pedestrian traffic in both boroughs, there are strict and steady safety measures taken in order to run smoothly and without any accidents.”

Unfortunately, even if the proposal is accepted right away, which seems very likely, then the line will only be available for full use in 2024. But we’re New Yorkers, we can handle the wait.
