BREAKING: There’s a #RiseUpOctober march happening right now

It’s heading down Sixth Ave

Chants of “No Justice, No Peace” are currently filling the air, as hundreds of protestors march along 6th Avenue to protest police brutality and the targeting of minorities, especially African-Americans.

Banners with slogans such as “Stop Police Brutality” and this particular march’s “Which Side Are You On?” are seen.

A truck with protesters shouting the names of victims through megaphones was seen inching along with marchers. The protest is contained – marchers walk in the confines of barriers set up all along 6th Avenue, to allow for cars and pedestrians to cross.

This is part of a three-day protest action. Yesterday, #RiseUpOctober protesters marched on Riker’s Island in a call to shut it down, following reports of prison brutality and injustice. A dozen or more protesters were arrested, according to RT.

Dan Cione, a Hunterite and member of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), described how there are around 10 Hunter students marching in solidarity from the Hunter clubs SJP, Students Without Borders, and the Internationalist Club.

Members from other CUNYs are also in the march. “Every 28 hours – even less now – a black person is killed by the police.”

In response to why this particular set of dates was chosen, Dan said: “October 22 is the national day against police brutality, but the people who organized it – the Revolutionary Communist Party decided to march 2 days later.

“There was action on Riker’s Island where Cornel West intentionally got himself arrested. The people tried to block the road going to Riker’s Island. They tried to shut it down and a lot of people got arrested.”

The march began at 11pm in Washington Square Park and is heading to Bryant Park to a 4pm rally.
