There is a protest outside the Chancellor’s apartment building right now

Adjuncts are demanding a new contract with CUNY

A few hundred students, teachers, and faculty members are lined up in front of Chancellor Milliken’s apartment building on 68th Street, just a block away from Hunter.

Protesters are holding picket signs marked with the slogan of the movement #CUNYneedsaraise and alarm clocks ringing in an effort to “Wake Chancellor Milliken up”.

Protestors, led by the Professional Staff Congress of CUNY, advocated for a new contract for adjunct lecturers – who have not seen an agreement in six years.

Political Science senior Alexia said: “If adjuncts are being treated as disposable, it affects students.

“Adjuncts don’t get paid for the time they spend outside of class, meeting with students and helping us get through school outside of lectures.

“Everyone’s struggle is connected: students and teachers in CUNY, and all people working in education in the United States.”

Adjunct Professor of History Sandor John added: “Most teachers at CUNY are adjuncts, meaning they’re living in poverty.

“Inequality in CUNY is increasing, and we all have to dedicate ourselves to improving the system, or otherwise, shut it down.”
