Cornellians: It’s last day to register to vote in New York

Your future is on the line

Cornellians and the greater population of America – I’m here to tell you why you should and how you can vote in our upcoming election. For many people, the deadline to register has already passed or is quickly approaching. I’ve come up with a simple list of why you need to sign up to vote.

Today, Friday, October 14 is your last chance to register to vote in New York for the upcoming presidential election on November 8th.

Your vote really does count

Don’t sell yourself short. Simply put, if you round up everyone who shares this sentiment with you, then collectively, yes you really do have the power to make a difference. Moreover, someone will be elected. If you are very against a candidate, perhaps due to their bigotry, then you have the power to keep them from realistically leading our country.

It’s easy and free!

It’s really not a hassle. You can find people all over central campus with voter registration forms. Head to Ho Plaza if you want to be sure to find one.

You can even do it online in probably less than five minutes. Just some of the websites you can use are:

https://vote.gov/

https://register.rockthevote.com/registrants/new

https://dmv.ny.gov/org/more-info/electronic-voter-registration-application

If you don’t understand how to vote, there are many people around who would be more than willing to help you out. Also, Google can solve most quick fix problems you have.

It’s not a commitment to actually vote

However, you are locking yourself out of the opportunity to do so if you don’t register! You can make the big decisions about who to vote for later on. If you’re unsure, you can register as an independent voter. You can either register where you attend college or in your home state, but not both. If you decide to register in another place, make sure you have you take care of your absentee ballot before that deadline comes up.

If you’re not “into” politics…

That’s totally OK. However, if you are a citizen in the United States, you have a right to vote. You also have the chance to become an active participant. Please don’t rebel against the political system, just because you don’t absolutely love any of the candidates. As previously mentioned, registration isn’t forcing your vote, but it gives you the option to. This option also allows you to do more research on policy or to hear more opinions within the next month. It also allows you to be involved in future local elections that can directly impact you and the community in which you live.

Go out, sign up, do some research, and take control of your say as a part of this country! As a fellow Cornellian, all I can do is urge you to be active in this country and community, and be smart in the upcoming election.
